Sloten Village
You can combine your visite to the mill with a walk through the picturesque Sloten, a 1000 year old village, in 1921 incorporated by Amsterdam.
On the village square you can see an old water pump that is still working. Here you also will find the smallest police-station in the Netherlands and a historic fire-alarm. A little bit further, hidden behind the houses, there is a “ban pole” dating from 1794. Such a pole was meant to indicate the point at which criminals were banned from entering Amsterdam.
At the Sloten Windmill you can buy a booklet with a walking tour of Sloten. For groups a guided tour of the village can be arranged (Phone +31-20-6690412).
Tip for a walking tour of about 6 kilometer through rural area.
Take from the Amsterdam city-center Tram No. 2. Good start! This is according to The National Geographic Traveller is one of the finest tram lines in the world. It leads you through 4 centuries of city architecture. From the end of the line you walk through a little park, through the historical village of Sloten to the windmill. After visiting the mill, you continue next to the houseboats in the ring canal via the “Zwarte Pad” to the former Akermolen, now a tea house. Take a cup of tea and walk to Tramline No. 1 to return to the center of Amsterdam.
