The Sloten Windmill
The Sloten Windmill is a functioning draining mill and at the same time the only Mill in Amsterdam open to the public daily.
The Mill is situated in the outskirts of Amsterdam along the Ringvaart and takes care of the level of water in the surrounding lower lying area remaining below a certain level. It is a Stellingmill with an-eightsided back, rebuilt here in 1847.
The whole year along the Mill can be visited daily (except Jan. 1st, April 26th and Dec. 25 and 26).
The Mill has a lift to enable elderly and handicapped people to get to the first platform.
Volunteer staff members happily explain things during conducted tours. And when possible the Miller will show how he turns the millcap to the wind, let turn the wheels or stops them or how he sets the sails in the wings.
In short, a visit is worthwhile!
